For everyone, 2020 has been a year of challenge and change. A once in a generation pandemic has meant rapidly altering the way we work and live our lives. Scott McGregor, Managing Director, reflects on our year and looks at what’s next.
March and COVID-19
No-one could have foreseen what was going to hit us in March. Denmark rapidly went into shutdown and we all began working from home. The majority of us work in a flexible way and so it wasn’t too disconcerting but for some of our staff with small children, it was certainly an interesting experience, let’s say. The UK followed not far behind and we all found ourselves protecting ourselves and our families at home. In Denmark, we gradually went back to the office in the summer and then equally gradually, we have all retreated home again.
Myself, Mark Lipscombe and Mark Baillet are extremely proud of the way our staff in the UK and Denmark have shown real flexibility and professionalism to continue delivering high quality during these challenging times. We are privileged to work with such a dedicated, resourceful and reliable team.
A Virtual Life
We’ve made time for some online parties and festivities which is good for the soul. S-cubed Biometrics in the UK have had regular virtual coffee mornings to maintain social contact and in Denmark, we have had virtual Friday Bars. The Regulatory Team have had regular ‘quarantinies’ and I wonder if they will be continuing them the in future! Despite everything, we have still managed to take part in the annual cycle to work event (even if it meant cycling around the area where we live) with the team captain sending out motivational poetry and, in Denmark, we had a small outside get together in the summer. Looking back, I think we thought we’d be back to some kind of normality by now.
However, since then, we have sent daylight lamps home, had pre-Christmas virtual get togethers and a festive party package arrived on people’s doorsteps to lift the spirits. Now, we are certainly all looking forward to a well-earned Christmas break.
As for the business, it has continued to thrive and our statisticians, programmers and Qlik team have been extremely busy in Denmark and now we are looking for new people to join us. S-cubed Biometrics Ltd have secured new staff and are also incredibly busy, including working on COVID-19 trials. And S-cubed Ltd, our Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance team, are actively engaged, focusing on the BREXIT transition and the impact that will have on companies.
We have been fortunate to be working in an industry that has not been hit so hard by the pandemic. But most importantly, it is our dedicated staff that have worked hard throughout 2020 to ensure that we are looking forward to a prosperous 2021. However, the biggest change has been the lack of travel. We haven’t been physically at any events this year, but we have contributed to PHUSE and CDISC, run webinars and continued to provide the best information we can to our clients and readers, through our regular news updates.
Whilst it might be a while before we are all physically back together both within S-cubed and at events etc, myself, Mark & Mark would like to wish all our clients, colleagues and friends, a safe, healthy and peaceful Christmas and New Year and a more normal 2021.
